It is estimated that Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs) cost the NHS up to 1 billion pounds per year. Around 9% of patients at any one time have a hospital acquired infection (100, 000 per year). It has been reported that UK annual deaths due to HAIs (approx 5000) exceed those due to road traffic accidents.
