Arjohuntleigh Tackles Pressure Ulcers

ArjoHuntleigh, a leading provider of integrated solutions for the care of people with reduced mobility and related conditions, has launched a new promotional campaign to highlight the issue of pressure ulcers.

Facility-acquired pressure ulcers cost the global healthcare sector millions of euros each year to treat, but can often be prevented or their impact reduced, according to ArjoHuntleigh’s Clinical Director, Lyn Phillips: “Without a doubt, the greatest risk to the skin is prolonged pressure due to immobility. The use of a special mattress that moves gently beneath the patient every few minutes can provide a similar level of protection as natural spontaneous movement; something we all do even when we are asleep! This simple but effective process can have a dramatic and beneficial impact on the damage pressure ulcers can do to patients and healthcare budgets,” she says.

Lyn explains: “Our aim is to remind patients and clinicians that the primary cause of pressure ulcers is unrelieved pressure, and that Active therapy is clinically proven to reduce the risk of pressure damage. With this in mind, our agency came up with the concept of comparing the human body with other parts of the natural world, and like the natural world the body cannot cope with too much pressure.”

The creative, designed by London agency, The AGA Group, uses a striking tomato visual to represent human skin, and the impact of excess pressure.

“The campaign has prompted an immediate response from our customers, our colleagues and our peers,” Lyn adds, “for its simplicity in communicating what is often a complicated message in a way that is immediately easy to understand.”

The campaign is scheduled to run in a broad range of hospital and clinical titles across the UK and Europe, as well as online, where the tomato is shown dropping from a height before bursting on impact.

Sean Feast of The AGA Group adds: “The subject of pressure ulcers is a significant one for the healthcare profession and so from a creative perspective it could have been approached in a number of different ways. We wanted the message to be direct without being condescending or alarmist – and the image of a tomato is not what the audience expects to see in the healthcare press, so there is no question that it stands out. We are very pleased the campaign is grabbing the right kind of attention through its simplicity.”

This annual show, held in Montreal, which welcomes more than 2000 visitors, is the meeting place of managers and workers who show an interest for concrete improvement and innovation. The Best Business Practices exhibition offers concrete solutions to organizations on how to improve their productivity and performance.

BHM was asked to share its experience by presenting the results of the “Gemba Walk", part if its quest of Lean Manufacturing. “Gemba Walk”, consists in going where the value-added activities take place.

The objectives are to effectively address opportunities for improvement, emphasize
communication and teamwork, reduce lead times, improve success rate of products “right the first time” and ultimately, increase productivity.

A multi-departmental team was formed and tours the plant floor every morning to review the results, identify opportunities and assign responsibility for quick resolution of problems.

The results are very impressive. On average, nine improvement actions a week are resolved within 24 hours, not less than 15 improvement projects and 6 Kaisen were completed in the last 12 months.

The “Gemba Walk” team was anxious to present this project at the exhibition and share the benefits of this practice.

The team is proud of its accomplishments and was able to transmit their knowledge
and experience and discuss continuous improvement with representatives from various
companies.

Safe Patient Handling Law in California

California's Gov. Jerry Brown said he would sign a law to protect nurses and other carers from disabling injuries from lifting patients. The law requires all California hospitals to have a safe patient handling policy, including employees trained to move patients using proper patient lifting and transfer equipment.

The full TR is the first and only ISO report with specific focus on clinical evidence of patient handling. The TR describes the multifunctional approach to patient handling including: methods and guidelines for risk evaluation, organizational aspects, criteria for the choice and use of equipment, training, buildings and environment in relation to risk estimation, and evaluation of patient handling interventions. The TR recommends the use of Mobility Gallery and the Care Thermometer developed by ArjoHuntleigh. The TR publication provides strong evidence for safe patient handling intervention with a good base for future guidelines and legislations.

Getinge assumes global leading position in pressure ulcer prevention and healing

Getinge has today signed a definitive agreement with US-based Kinetic Concepts Inc. (KCI) to acquire KCI’s Therapeutic Support Systems (TSS) business. Getinge is currently a major player in pressure ulcer prevention and healing in many European markets, while KCI’s primary geographical area of strength is the North American market. The combination of Getinge’s and KCI’s TSS business creates a global platform with strong positions in most key markets, with significant potential for portfolio and operational synergies. The TSS portfolio and operations will be integrated into Getinge Extended Care under the ArjoHuntleigh brand.

About Therapeutic Support Systems

The TSS business includes a comprehensive portfolio of specialty therapeutic beds, mattress replacement systems and other support surfaces and patient mobility devices. TSS has a particularly strong portfolio for therapeutic wound care, bariatric care and critical care settings. TSS had revenues of USD 247 million in 2011, with approximately 1300 employees globally with sales locations in the US, Canada, Germany, Austria, Italy Switzerland, the UK and France. In 2011, the US market accounted for 60% of the TSS business, with Europe accounting for approximately 30%. Similar to Getinge Extended Care’s Therapeutic Surfaces business, rental is the primary business model applied for serving customers in acute and post-acute care. The acquisition will enable Getinge Extended Care to achieve a balance between equipment sales and recurring revenues, and the business in the US will increase significantly, in line with its strategic goals. “The acquisition of TSS provides an optimal extension of Getinge’s Extended Care business, boosting the competencies of our operations. Sales and operational synergies

Integration of TSS with Extended Care’s Therapeutic Surfaces business is expected to create operational synergies in sales, distribution operations, manufacturing and headquarter functions. The complementary nature of the two product portfolios is expected to generate channel synergies and increased customer value. TSS has strong positions in critical and bariatric care while Extended Care’s focus has been in general care. Both portfolios have complementary products for Intensive Care Units (ICUs).

Financial effects

The acquisition of TSS takes the form of a carve-out, whereby Getinge purchases all assets and intellectual property associated to the TSS business. The acquisition price, debt-free, is USD 275 million (enterprise value), which corresponds to an EV/EBITDA multiple of 5.7x based on annual profit in 2011 on a stand-alone basis. Acquiring TSS’s net assets will result in goodwill, which is fully tax deductible at a tax value of approximately USD 30 million (not included in the above-mentioned multiple). Transaction and restructuring costs will amount to USD 35 million, of which USD 25 million will be charged to Getinge’s profit in the fourth quarter of 2012. The remaining USD 10 million will be charged next year. The acquisition is pending approval of the competition authorities in several countries and Getinge expects the transaction to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2012. The acquisition is expected to contribute to Getinge’s profit per share in 2013, including restructuring and financing costs and goodwill adjustments. The transaction will be financed through a bridge loan.

ArjoHuntleigh awarded new Vascular Compression Therapy agreement with Premier healthcare alliance

October 4, 2012 – ArjoHuntleigh announced today that it has been awarded a three-year contract with Premier Purchasing Partners, L.P., the group purchasing unit of the Premier healthcare alliance, for its vascular compression therapy systems. The agreement, effective December 1, 2012, allows Premier members, at their discretion, to take advantage of special pricing and terms pre-negotiated by Premier for ArjoHuntleigh’s range of Flowtron® vascular compression therapy systems used for the prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Getinge has received approval from the relevant regulatory bodies to complete the acquisition of Kinetic Concepts Inc.’s TSS division. The acquisition was finalised on 8 November 2012, and will be consolidated into Getinge’s accounts as of 1 November 2012.

The TSS business includes a comprehensive portfolio of specialty therapeutic beds, mattress replacement systems and other support surfaces and patient mobility devices. TSS has a particularly strong portfolio for therapeutic wound care, bariatric care and critical care settings. In 2011, TSS generated sales of USD 247 million and the operation employs nearly 1,300 individuals worldwide.

Getinge strengthens competitiveness through concentration of production units and establishes global innovation center

Getinge continues to enhance its operational efficiency by further concentrating its production to fewer units with greater resources. As a step in this pursuit, the Extended Care business area intends to relocate the manufacturing of its bath and hygiene products from Eslöv, Sweden, to the production facility in Poznan, Poland, and to a third party.

The planned change will lead to the successive discontinuation of production in Eslöv. All staff in Arjo Hospital Equipment in Eslöv and at Meditechnik in Germany will be affected. About 150 employees in Eslöv and at Meditechnik are expected to be made redundant, the majority in Sweden. The staff in Eslöv and at Meditechnik was informed of the planned changes this morning.

“We will initiate discussions with the Swedish Public Employment Service and the municipality to support the process of finding new employment for the staff who are expected to be made redundant due to the planned discontinuation of the operation in Eslöv,” says Alex Myers, Executive Vice President of Extended Care.

The discontinuation is scheduled to commence in mid-2013 and is expected to be completed during the second half of 2014.

Getinge’s Extended Care business area, which operates under the ArjoHuntleigh brand, will at the same time continue its intense focus on research and development and on establishing a global innovation center in Malmö. The center will concentrate on developing the company’s global range of mobility and hygiene products, and will employ about 65 individuals. The center is expected to open in spring 2013.
